Environmental Stewards
Whenever we use our natural resources there are consequences to our actions. However, some ways are easier on the environment than others. As we recently witnessed with an off-shore drilling disaster no method is without risk of impacting our water, air or land.
In Alberta our business is energy.
We know the value of all our resources and respect the role they play in our world.
Carbon Capture and Storage of Greenhouse Gases
More than any other region in North America, Alberta is well suited for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) of GHG emissions from bitumen upgrading.
That is why we use our leading edge carbon capture technology to upgrade resources in Alberta, by fostering greater environmental citizenship rather than exporting these resources elsewhere with high carbon emissions.
The use of CCS technology will dramatically reduce the overall carbon intensity of energy derived from our oil sands to a point where they can meet new and tough standards being imposed in some US states.
Caring for our Air, Water and Land
Upgrading in Alberta builds on synergistic opportunities by integrating industrial development to reduce overall air, water and waste emissions by 50%.
Alberta’s “Cumulative Effect Management” project for the region has utilized the latest and most stringent standards to ensure protection of the air and water sheds in the area.
Much thought and consideration has been accounted for as these upgraders are built in stringent industrial areas where they are part of the larger “Capital Region Growth Management Plan” and will fit into Alberta’s Land Use Framework.
